About Yew Tree
MUSIC CLASS
Classes are lead by a professional musical tutor and aim to increase the flexibility of the vocal chords, develop basic musical reading and improve articulation and projection while maintaining good technique. The small groups allow most children to have solo or featured roles if they wish and integration into the other disciplines are actively encouraged. Solo lessons are offered with tutors if a student would benefit from one to one tuition and music theory, exams and festivals are actively encouraged if interest is shown by students in class.
DANCE CLASS
The dance classes offer wide-ranging training and opportunities within many dance styles including classical ballet, contemporary, jazz, tap and other social dance styles such as street and lindy hop. Alongside this technical training students develop their creative skills through choreography and improvisational classes and workshops. Such training is then further integrated into musical theatre appreciation.
Examinations are offered to those who wish to partake in Freestyle Jazz Tap and musical theatre dance. The school has enjoyed fantastic results since the exams were introduced with benefits seen in confidence and recognition of technical and creative ability in class shown.
The Musical Theatre classes are designed to give an equal focus to dance, drama and music, and the development of skills and knowledge in these performance disciplines. Musical Theatre students are typically versatile and flexible in their approach to the performing arts. Plus one classes run at our base in Tunbridge Wells where those students who wish to further their study of the art can be supported. Examinations in Speech and drama and musical theatre are offered to all students who would benefit from extra time.
Performances, professional visits, theatre trips and workshops are offered alongside to enhance the student’s appreciation of what is studied in weekend classes.
DRAMA CLASS
Students take part in a wide variety of improvisation and acting workshops, some of which will result in individual and group performances in class. For older students some classes will be text based and will work on characterisation drawing on physicality and voice.
Students will have the opportunity to learn how to select, develop and refine their ideas for original theatre into performance. They will experiment through play/theatre games and physicality to develop skills in this area.
Examinations with Trinity College London are offered in drama, speech and Musical Theatre. Grade(s) run alongside GCSE and A level standards and contribute to UCAS point system.
All students are given the opportunity to perform through the year including one fully staged production, which alternates over Easter and summer holidays. A Christmas Showcase happens every year for all students where a chance to see what has been learnt through the year is performed in a studio theatre.
The futures for our students are bright and exciting. Theatre students have gone on to study at many leading drama schools including RADA, Central, Rose Bruford, Drama Centre, East 15, LIPA, and the London Academy. Plus many have enjoyed studying musical theatre, music and dance at Laines, Arts Educational, LSMT, The Brit School, Mountview, Brighton Rock School and London Contemporary School of Dance. |
